National Bomb Pop Day – Making of a YouTube Video – Day 1

A recent assignment for PR Newswire, shooting behind-the-scenes of the making of a YouTube video for Original Bomb Pop‘s National Bomb Pop Day on June 25 this year, made for an outrageous two days of filming. [Day 2 on the Santa Monica Pier]

Working with YouTube stars Monica Church and Shelby Church, we spent the day basically … playing! 🙂

My assignment was to shoot documentary-style, capturing beauty shots when possible, but staying more focused on the production rather than individuals. The main requirement, as with any time I shoot around video crews, was to be very aware of camera angles of the video crew … and stay the heck out of them! While my assignment is to shoot the “making of,” their assignment is to actually produce a commercial video for a national advertiser, Original Bomb Pop.

Director Ashley Kozjek Slates a Scene

The first day, June 6, 2015, was spent at Joseph Le Conte Middle School in Hollywood, California in what is famously called by us locals “June Gloom,” a heavy overcast of low clouds that typically encroach from the sea each morning until burning off usually in the early afternoon as the seasons change from Spring to Summer.

The story line for the morning was to capture a bunch of kids exiting school, seeing the Bomb Pop truck, and racing to get treats and SWAG. With a crew call early in the morning, brand ambassador Zach McCall was pumped for the day!

Le Conte Middle School was chosen as the location for this shoot as the afternoon was to be spent in the only skatepark on LAUSD property, but more on that later.

We found this sign particularly entertaining as our plans for the day include all of these activities! 😉

Producer Michelle Merino and director Ashley Kozjek give instructions to today’s extras, actual students at Le Conte, many of which participate in the EduSkate Foundation’s after school programs, but … yeah … more on that later! 😉

We did several takes of the first scene, the kids bursting out of school and racing to the truck.

Which gave me the chance to capture it from different angles.

… and widen the shot …

… so that eventually the viewer gets to see the entire set.

Then it’s break time … a/k/a … time for Zach to re-energize the kids. No problem there! 😀

While the camera crew sets up for the next shot …

… the kids find their own ways of staying entertained!

Before you know it, it’s time to gather around the truck …

… and play silly games for treats! Yay! 😀

And SWAG …

Oh boy was there SWAG! ❤ 🙂

And all the Bomb Pops the kids could eat!

After a break for lunch, it was finally time to let the kids show us their stuff in the skatepark!

Now in its 13th year, the brainchild of Le Conte teachers Greg Delger and Saul Chorro, along with their partner Lance Bowling, the EduSkate Foundation champions the cause of using skateboarding to work with inner city at risk youth in the Hollywood area. It is their efforts that are responsible for the construction of this skatepark, and they are planning to build more! 🙂

As the program grew, they discovered a natural talent with autistic children as well, who are set free by the motion and mobility of skateboarding. Over time, the results of the EduSkate Foundation’s efforts show improved attendance, grades and graduation rates while the community has seen a reduction in crime, gang and drug activity in the immediate area.

Even Monica …

… and Shelby got into the action with their student instructors.

Now comes the real entertainment for the afternoon! 😉

The producers have come up with a shot they want Monica and Shelby to do. It starts out innocently enough, with simple instructions. Shelby is to have a seat on a skateboard, while holding two more, and Monica is going to give her a little ride with a gentle push. “You want us to go right there?” Monica confirms.

The girls are clearly thinking they have this thing nailed, you can see it in their faces!

And it’s good … as they pick up speed … for a while …

… until …

So … let’s reset and do another take. You can see in their faces, “We’re going to take this seriously this time!” 😉

The girls are focused …

You can tell Shelby is not going to fall this time … she’s not going to fall … she’s not going to fall! 😀

  1. Reblogged this on EduSkate Foundation and commented:

This was such a FUN photo shoot with the EduSkate Foundation and so many of the kids from Le Conte Middle School. It was the spark of the relationship between the EduSkate Foundation and Roth Stock Digital Media. We’re all so glad to have turned this single day into a long-term relationship. 🙂
