National Bomb Pop Day: Making of a YouTube Video at the Santa Monica Pier

When receiving the assignment from PR Newswire to do a corporate branding/consumer event on the Santa Monica Pier, with brand ambassadors handing out frozen treats to visitors, my reaction was, “What a fun idea … Let’s do this!” 😀 I love events where I get to directly interact with the “audience.” It’s completely different from working a press line.

We actually had a couple of assignments for the day. My main assignment being to document the making of a YouTube Video for Original Bomb Pop‘s National Bomb Pop Day (press release). Held on the last Thursday of June since 1955, the videos premiered on June 25, 2015. I say videos plural because in addition to the one produced on the pier, we also spent Day 1 at Le Conte Middle School in Hollywood.

This day on the pier is to be spent with YouTube star Aspyn Ovard and her then boyfriend, now husband, Parker Ferris as we explore the amusements at Pacific Park, and play with the tourists! 😉

Note to out of town publicists when booking a beach shoot in Southern California in June. There is this weather phenomena referred to as “June Gloom” which happens very reliably each day of … oddly enough … June. 😮

Due to the warming of the desert east of Los Angeles, and the cold water off the coast coming down from Alaska, the conditions are perfect for dense fog banks every morning. Not to worry though, the fog tends to burn off between 11am and 1pm … usually. Unfortunately for us though, not on this day! 😦

Being as we’re promoting something called Bomb Pops, it seemed only natural that part of the shoot would be photo bombs. This one took a few tries to get right as Aspyn recorded a vlog for her site.

As the brand ambassadors were handing out t-shirts saying, “Ask me why my tongue is blue!” my mantra for the day was, “Show me your tongue!” We even got an entire family involved! 😀

Santa Monica Police Department officer Marioni and his (appropriately) bomb sniffing dog Rambo stopped by for a visit. It’s clear that Rambo could sniff out our little Bomb [Pops] … and he wanted one! 😉

Being an event photographer, a big part of what I do is watch for opportunities. When I spotted blue cotton candy that perfectly matched this little girl’s hoodie, I quickly asked her mother if she could play with us. Not quite sure mom realized the seriousness of the sugar buzz we were going to deliver, but the little girl, a fan of Aspyn’s, had a ball! 🙂

After a long morning of shooting, Aspyn decided it was time for a little dance break!

As part of promotional campaigns with PR Newswire, there is an option to have a key photo shown on the Thompson Reuters Jumbotron in Times Square. Having worked in Hollywood for more than 20 years and photographed some of the top names in entertainment at Hollywood’s most prestigious events, THIS is the first photo of mine to be broadcast in Times Square. Go figure! 😀
