In Hollywood, It’s All About Who You Know – But There Really is More To It – Roth Stock Pictures: Event Photography for the Entertainment Industry

There has been a lot going on in the past week that I haven’t been sharing here. So first, this was Friday night at 11:02pm at the corner of Hollywood and Vine. I had just left a meeting at this world-famous intersection. The photos below are from my cell and were posted on Instagram @roth.stock and on Facebook.

Today, there was an interesting conversation in one of the film groups on Facebook. A new writer recently quit her accounting job, moved to LA, took a few film writing classes, and posted an introduction to the community, asking what to do next as a newcomer to the industry. A reply was quickly posted about also being new in the area with, “no friends and no nepotism.” Another comment was that Hollywood is all about who you know.

Below is my reply …

Along the lines of what was said ^^^ … I approach that as a 2-part statement.

Hollywood is all about who you know … and what you may do for friends. When it comes down to crewing up and casting, what do the collective “we” in Hollywood do first?

Call on people we know?
Why?
It’s easier, but in reality, it’s far more efficient!

When placing people I know on cast and crew, or when someone needs my still photography services, I don’t have to watch over or worry about quality issues after I have worked with someone a time or two. That makes work better and more efficient at every level of the production.

If I have been your stills photographer in the past, then you already know my work; my willingness to try anything (as long as it’s safe!), the angles I like, the unique shots I like to produce, etc.

Side effect … it’s also a LOT more fun! 😀
